This program we take a journey into another world. Julia Kurtz is our guest and she’s a beekeeper from York County, Pennsylvania. While bees may seem like just another part of the background of life on planet Earth, they play a vital part in the food system that keeps us alive. It turns out that the honey that bees make is really just a sweet byproduct of the bees activities. Their higher purpose is pollination. Humans would be very hungry without the pollination work of the bees.

While honey is indeed part of a small family of foods and spices that are considered “super foods,” it’s the pollination that’s at the heart of a genuine crisis in the world of bees that could seriously impact our ability to grow food. Even GMO foods need the bees! The issue is called, “Bee Colony Collapse Disorder.”

The  2013 documentary film, “More Than Honey” is an excellent primmer on the subject. If you are a Netflix subscriber, the film is available in the “Watch Instantly” library of movies.

Here’s the official trailer for the 2013 documentary film, “More Than Honey.” Enjoy!

Life inside a bee hive is very complex. There is an order and organization that is simply amazing and ancient. But like all living systems, bee hives have natural predators from the insect and microbial worlds. But the latest assault to the beehives is coming from GMO crops and the use of herbicides and pesticides, such as Ready Roundup. The chemicals that kill the pests are picked up on the bees’ fur and taken back into the hive where it does what all pesticides do – kills insects – INCLUDING the bees.

Julia Kurtz is the president of the York County Beekeepers Association ( http://www.ycbk.org/ ) and a retired Sergeant with the York City Police Department, in York, PA. As a beekeeper of many years, she’s on the front line of the issue of Bee Colony Collapse Disorder. Julia will be our guest tonight to explain to us the seriousness of this important issue.

"If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.
No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more man."
